LITTLE BLACK TOPSY is the classic tale of a young hero who desires a great adventure. The tale chronicles her journey as a young black woman. It weaves together theater and performance art, drawing from traditional depictions blackness and girlhood such as in minstrel shows and childrens' stories.

Writing, directing, and starring in LITTLE BLACK TOPSY is MassArt Alumna and performance artist Cori Spencer. Her work focuses on the contentious nature of the relationship between whiteness and blackness and the desire and repulsion that swims between the color lines.

“As a performer, it has been my goal to implement a movement vocabulary which not only expresses the tension that I witness between whiteness and blackness, but manifests that tension in the movements of a singular body.”
- Cori Spencer
